Mesmer and Animal Magnetism

Energy and the flow of life force in the human body have always been attributed to ancient oriental beliefs. The concept of Chi and the practice of correcting its flow on the human body to improve the health and well being of a person have always been considered by the west as a form of magical practice or superstition. However, one person from the west developed his own theory that is somewhat similar to the concept of Chi that is more inline with scientific concepts. That person would be Franz Anton Mesmer (Moos, 23 maggio 1734 – Meersburg, 5 marzo 1815)

Hailing from a village in Swabia, Germany named Iznang, near Lake Constance, he was the son of a forester named Anton Mesmer and his wife Maria. As his home was in the country side, he grew up to be surrounded with awe inspiring landscapes. Spending a lot of time with nature, he developed great interest in out the causes of things, like tracing a brook to its source. This good characteristic of his would later on aid him in discovering Animal Magnetism.

When he finished his analysis, he decided to pursue the field of Philosophy and then Medicine instead of Theology as what was intended for him. During this time, he produced a doctoral dissertation “On the influence of the Planets on the Human Body” citing than a human body also has ‘tides’ that are affected by the pull of the Moon and the Planets as they do on the tides of the Ocean. When he became a doctor, he adjusted these concepts in treating his patients and made use of magnets to aid improvement. In time, he inferred that it were no longer the magnets aiding healing but the healer himself. His results showed that humans also possess the same magnetic force used in his healing approach. This is where he discovered Animal Magnetism.
